I can probably speak best about what's going on in Madison, WI, as I'm the
autocross chair here. We have a fairly active club, Madison Sports Car
Club. MSCC, as pointed out, is part of the sanctioning body Midwestern
Council of Sports Car Clubs. Autocross rules are different than SCCA's but
it's certainly not a bad thing as Pat likes to hint at. Neither is really
better, they're just different.
Our autocross program is slightly more laid back than a typical SCCA event.
We try to have as much fun and competition as possible, but continue to be
low pressure. Don't get me wrong, there is still a lot of competition here.
In the past, we've been relatively small averaging 43 cars per event. In
the last two years, though, we've almost doubled, averaging 70 cars per
event. We run many more events than the local SCCA region, this year we're
doing 11 competition events. Milwaukee region is running, I believe 7
events and 2 of those events were the CenDiv.
All that said, as Pat mention, Milwaukee region, just an hour a way, has got
one of the BEST autocross sites in the nation. I find myself attending
their events on a regular basis as well. If you need to prepare for
nationals, this is where you want to go. Madison is rather short on
suitable space and many of our courses can not be laid out like a typical
course. Besides the Milwaukee region, there's also the Wisconsin
Autocrossers Inc (WAI) that runs in Milwaukee using SCCA rules.
Other things MSCC does include TSD rallys, picnics, club night out (last
year it was kart racing at one of the kart tracks), highspeed autocross
(Solo I style on a road course) and wheel to wheel racing. We've even
started doing some community involvement talking to kids about the dangers
of street racing and where they can appropriately drive their car at its
limits.
The highspeed autocross program is what Eric mentioned. It's basically Solo
I without all the safety requirements. I've yet to determine if that's a
good or a bad thing, but it's been working fine for 50 years. It's a blast
and we do offer schools/instructors for rookies to the track.
Our wheel to wheel program allows ANY car to compete, though sometimes in an
unlimited category. We also host many of the typical SCCA classes. Spec
Miata has been shaping up a lot, I think we're around an average 15 drivers
for each event. We also have two annual enduro races, the premier event
will be a 10 hour enduro at Gingerman over Labor day weekend.
