I did two road races at Gateway last year.

First off, the track is more like about 5 minutes from the heart of downtown
St. Louis to the track. Literally, you drive over the bridge (over the
Mississippi) on I-70, go maybe 4 miles east and you can see the track
grandstands off to the left (north). Swing off at the exit there and you
roll right to the track entrance (which is a left turn off the road the exit
puts you on, and there is a traffic light there with two left turn lanes).

It may be on the extreme east end of the division, but access is really
easy. It was close enough we thought nothing of leaving the race car at the
track Sunday morning (I only raced Saturday) while taking the kids to go see
the Arch, then going back and loading up the car to go home. And we were
still headed home by 1 pm.

For the races there was not an event hotel as such. Registration and tech
was at the track. I've no news as to how they will do it for the Solo event
but I don't anticipate it really being a problem.

Last year we stayed in Collinsville, at a Day's Inn once and at a
TraveLodge once (because the Days lost our reservation the second time, but
they fixed it by getting us in at the TraveLodge at the rate they quoted).
That was about another 5-6 miles further down I-70 (exit 11) -- or maybe 5
minutes the other direction from the track. Both were reasonably nice.
Neither was particularly ritzy. But then, most of the time we were in the
motel we were unconscious (sleeping), so who cared?

The entry form for the October race listed a Quality Inn, Days Inn (the one
we stayed at), Drury Inn, Fairfield Inn, Holiday Inn, Super 8, Best Western,
Ramada, HoJo, Thrifty Inn and Motel 6. Obviously a nice range of hotels from
which to choose. I'd not be surprised to see some of the same listed on the
Solotime entry form.
