Two things to remember:
Placing the PDF file on the web is a violation of the copyright held by
SCCA, INC. It's no different than going to work and using a copier to make
three or four hundred copies of the book and giving those to anyone who
asks, it's just a whole lot easier. The last person I know who took
something that was fairly obscure (and the SOLO II rules are) and placed it
on the web ended up with a fine of $75,000 plus $120,000 in legal expenses
of the copyright holder plus had to pay his own lawyer on top of that.
Sales of the rules book IS a profit center for the club (and the same goes
for the GCR, too.)
Also:
Placing the PDF on the web is simply ripping off all the rest of the members
who don't care about the Solo rules, because it reduces the sales that the
copyright holder (those of us who are SCCA members) expects. The club SELLS
the advertising space as well, based on an expected circulation. If the PDF
was on the web, then there is no reason to buy the ad space in the rule
book. This cuts into the clubs income as well.
Being able to search/modify/annotate/cut the PDF file is easy of you have
the full version of Acrobat. Pay Adobe the bucks and have at it for your
own personal use only.
This topic has been beaten to death on the Wheel2Wheel mailing list, also.
If you want to know more on copyright laws, read the US Federal code, Title
17, Chapter 1, Sections 105, 106, 106a and 107.
