Someone told me once that NJ inspections require the shift pattern be on the
shift knob (for cars that come with it). The golf ball shifter on my VW
would fail... Silly law if you ask me, kinda like the dB limit you just
mentioned. Makes me wonder how the "out of tune is cool" Harleys pass
inspection...

Subject: NJ inspection "laws"
Hello,
can someone point out to me WHERE can I find exact specs for NJ
inspection, i.e.: what's the max allowable noise level, what MUST be DOT
approved & what doesn't. My wife took my car to state inspection
station & they said that it's too loud. She asked them HOW loud is TOO
loud, what's the spec (db). The monkeys didn't know it (but they
already failed the car) & they sent her to see the manager. The manager
said that anything other than OEM exhaust WILL fail or it HAS to be just
as quiet as OEM exhaust. I don't believe it. BUT, I don't have any
hard evidence. Next time I'm taking the car there & I'm gonna give them
HELL but please, educate me. Does anyone know the Government/State
website w/rules?
Best regards,
Yuri Klepach
PS. So far, you guys have been GREAT helpers!!!!!
