My Miata did something similar - though I admit not as badly. I had
decided to wash the engine, and scrubbed it down pretty good. Ran very
badly for a day or two, then I found that one or two of the spark plug
holes were filled with water.

Easy to check, but I would think unlikely to happen with the hood down.
And hydrolock - never happened to me, but I would think that the engine
would just stop, period. Piston reaches a noncompressible point.
Otherwise water would be cleared pretty quickly. My vote for second cause
is wet ECU.

My plug wires lasted almost exactly 25,000 miles per set. Then I would get
rough idling. A common problem with Miatas.

Please, can someone give me some direction...
My girlfriend has a 94 miata, completely stock, with
like 80,000 miles on it.
It ran fine until one day after a hard rain storm, it
began to have idle troubles upon initial startup. It
ran, but struggled, and it didn't have enough power to
engage the clutch in first gear. Once it ran a
little, it was fine, but if it is cold, or even if you
turn it off and let it sit for more than 30 minutes,
it has problems.
Can it be the plug wires? I had new ones put on in
January, and it has only gone MAYBE 9500 miles since
then. My other thought was that there was maybe water
in the gas, but It seems to me that that would have
sorted itself out after a little while.
Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Buddy
