Yes, we have the same problem here in Atlanta. Seems to me with nearly 200
people per event, we have too many folks as is. Of course, the folks in
charge love the money, so aren't at all unhappy with this. My feeling is
that once you get past 60-80 entrants, you should keep it a secret. . . We
only get 3 runs, sadly.
I believe that we are raising the event fee next year by a bit (to $25 for
SCCA members? I'm not in the know). We are doing a bunch of other things
to handle the crowds. We're entirely paperless now if you have run with us
before, thanks to Ben Thatcher (our fearless leader). We have morning and
afternoon sessions, and will go from 3 groups each session to 2 in the
morning, 3 afternoon. The day 140 people showed up in the morning kind of
shook us. . . We are also going to allow people to pre-pay over the
internet, and not need to stand in line. Also to buy a season pass at a
discount, and never stand in line either. We'll see.
I have said it before - one good article with pictures in the local people
and we could have 400 people at our next event. <shudder!>

On man, I know, I know ... (arm raised and waving frantically)
straight our of Capatilism 101, Law of Supply & Demand,...
just keep raising the entry fee incrementally, there's an equilibrium out
there just waiting to happen...
