Yeah but cows are cheap and plentiful.  Just ask McDonalds.  Even better
would be horsehide.  ;^)

Kevlar, Spectrashield and other aramid fibers however do not grow on trees
and are still relatively expensive.  Yes they offer better protection if you
can afford them.  Of course we're more worried about fire/heat protection
than abrasion/cut/slash protection when road racing and participating in
track day events in cars.

The scary part of that article was how quickly denim went away and offered
bare skin to the pavement.  I never rode without leathers after that
article.

YEARS ago I saw a rather unscientific test in a motorcycle mag of
leather suits vs denim and various other things. Leather isn't nearly
the wonderful skin protector we all think it to be. Kinda like we
have all thought hay bales made good barriers on race courses until
we hit one or saw the results of a hit. Modern high strength fibers
offer better cut/slash/gouge protection than leather could dream of.
That's what bullet resistant vest are made of; Kevlar and stuff like it.
