My feeling is that while you did loop around and re-enter the course
(which I consider to be a wise strategy), you did not go back far
enough, and so you DNF'ed.  You never crossed the line defined by the
first and second slalom cones (that is, you never passed through that
"gate", if you consider pairs of slalom cones to be a "gate".)
