A question here for the Volkswagen contingent. My daily driver/autocross
car, a 16Valve GTI ate a timing belt. Of course it trashed the head (all
eight intake valves were open ) along with the cam and crank sprockets.
I replaced the head with a rebuilt unit from a reputable local rebuilder,
along with new parts and gaskets etc. Now I am having loads of really weird
engine problems.
The car will not start unless cranked for some time. When it does fire, it
runs like it is on 2 3/4 cylinders, or like the cams were from a 426 drag
Hemi engine. Once it gets over about 2000 rpm it evens out, but I can still
detect a slight intermittent miss at that rpm level. And the hydraulic
lifters are making noises like they aren't pumping up properly.
None of these driveability problems were apparant before the belt ate a
bunch of teeth. Has anyone else suffered through these problems? And if so,
what can I do, short of a pack of matches to fix them without going
bankrupt?
Thanks for the responses.
