sorry about this, but I'm getting out of my league here. A friend
just bought a 1995 Volvo 850. It needs tires. It has 205/50R15's on
it, TireRack.com says the right size is 195/60R15 and the owner's
manual says 185/60R15. First, I can't imagine putting 185's on a car
that big but how can he figure out what the manufacturer's correct
size is? (to compute any potential speedo error, he'll probably keep
the 205/50's on for summer and get 195/60 for winter)

He says that there is no B pillar sticker on the car. I'm having him
dump the contents of the glove box to find a glove box sticker...

Thanks, and back to cones...

205/55/15 is the correct size if you want your Brick to handle better
than stock. It is an optional size that Volvo offered in Europe but not
here. Doesn't mess with the speedometer much, and really improves the
grip. No interference problems either. Cheaper than a 205/50 too. The
850 is already a harsh ride. You don't need to make them harsher by
running 50 series.

I'm running the Dunlop Sport 9000 in the 205/55/15 size and I love 'em.
Great grip, progressive breakaway and killer wet traction. I find myself
way overdriving in the wet due to the traction they offer.

Yes Volvo is conservative with their tire size selection just like
everything else with their cars. Shoot, they offered 15 inch wheels long
after most sedans of size had gone to 16 inch. You don't really _need_
wide tires, right? ;>)

BTW the tire size sticker on the 850 is under the fuel filler door. Even
though the owners manual says it is on the pillar.
