No. IMO, the chance of submarining under the lap belt in a stock
autocross car is effectively nil -- since you're sitting upright, your
upper body will try to rotate forward rather than push you out the bottom.

True, but without that sub strap your shoulder harness, when properly
cinched up, will tend to pull the seatbelt buckle up under your ribcage.
It should be down over your hipbones.
So the sub strap is not so much there to keep you from submarining as to
keep the seatbelt pulled down and located where it really needs to be.
5-point not required, but IMHO the better way. You just bolt it thru that
"rainwater drain hole" just in front of the seat. What? Your car did not
come with one? Obvious production-line flaw easily fixed. :-)
