To which I say ick. You left out the other piece--people on race tires
can EITHER run in PAX class (against Sam Strano, Kent Rafferty, etc.) OR
in the SP class that their car goes to.

Given that there's no way on earth to change from race tires to street
tires and back between Eric's first run and my first run, his second run
and my second, his third and my third (5 tire changes, given North
Hills's heat structure), I can either run CSP or PAX. I realize that
someone has to finish last, and coming in last to the guys who run PAX
class isn't the worst thing in the world. On the other hand, if the only
events I ever ran were against the PAX class at North Hills, I could see
getting a bit demoralized (which is why I ran CSP last time I was
there...)

I'd also like to point out (as has been done before, but just to flog
this dead horse until there's really nothing left) my street tires
(Dunlop D60 A2's on steel wheels) are NOTHING like the Yokohama AVS on
alloys that another MR2 at NHSCC runs. If I planned on running all of
North Hills's events, I'd get serious (and expensive) street tires--not
my little $50 each Dunlops.

Last thing, I promise--adding/changing classes and/or adding/changing
rules on a local or regional level is certainly allowed for in SCCA rules
(which, BTW, don't really apply to North Hills since they aren't an SCCA
club), and if the members of the club in question think X is a fine thing
to do, then they should certainly do X. So, my question is, are the
members of the club with the single PAXed street tire class hearing about
the changes that their members would like to see? Autocrossing is a
grassroots kind of thing--use the fertilizer of your choice in your area.
