In reply to Your question, you can not repair  the forks inside of the 
transmission. If you are exchanging the engine I would work on the 
transmission at that time. It would be much easier to do all the work on the 
floor or work bench and have a better view of all your parts.

I use the HOLE to check the transmission oil.
