Chuck, the story I always heard was that it comes from them riding
horses on the left hand side of a trail, so that when they came upon
another traveler, their right hand (as most people are righties) was
free to draw a gun or sword, if need be.  This begs the question, why
are Americans left hand drive??  My wife, who is British, would say,
Just to be contrary!  Bill
