Well, for '67-'70 anyway.    For the bulk of the concurrent 
Alpine and Datsun Sports/Fairlady production years, the 
majority of cars had 1500 ('62~'65) or 1600 ('65~'70) overhead 
valve engines.  The 1600 engine continued to be offered as 
model option in addition to the 2000 until the end of the run 
in 1970 with the arrival of the Z.  

As far as the steering, it seems some people just have hang-ups 
about anything other than rack and pinion.
