Jeff:
If you do not totally remove the head you will not be able to clean the head
and block properly in preparation for proper installation of the new gasket,
nor will you be able to check the block and head for true.
Remove the head completely, and once it and the block are clean, go over the
two surfaces with a straight edge and feeler gauge to determine if there has
been warping of the head or block.
