Sean,
$90 bucks an hour...geez...drive it out to
Cincy...I'll do it for half!
If you buy the whole tranny from John, it's just a
matter of Pulling the pax seat, dash support, tunnel
cover. Then start undoing bolts. You should probably
use a jack to support the rear of the engine....be
sure to put a block of wood on top of the jack.
Probably easier to put the car on jack stands prior to
beginning.
Once everything is undone you'll need to wiggle the
tranny off...be ready. It's not that heavy and make
sure you have some blankets on the floor pan.
You have some decisions at this point. Do I change
the PP & clutch? Do I do the rear main seal?
Probably good to do a new bushing in the flywheel
though.
You'll need to separate the bracket on your 4-speed
mount as you'll be using some of it for your O/D
install. Install is pretty much the reverse. Make
sure that there are no burs on the tranny front
cover...don't want that ThrowOut bearing hanging up on
anything. Inspect the TO bearing as well. Make sure
you get the tranny properly aligned when you put it
all back together...that's done pretty much with the
bolts. About 3 o'clock & 7:30 there are a couple of
bolts that are bigger than the rest...don't remember
the size(sorry). Make sure you get the correct size
bolts installed in these locations.
We'll make the assumptions that John will provide a
top cover that's been drilled for a o/d switch for 3rd
& 4th. I don't know if John provides a cross shaft or
not?? You may need to use yours? Hardest part about
the wiring IMHO is installing the column switch...well
actually running the wiring under the column. The
column has to come up some to fish the wires though to
the back side of the dash. To do that, I had to pull
the tach & speedo & rock the dash out & up. It sounds
bad, but it's not.
I've done this operation by myself...unfortunately,
more than once...clutch issues. Another debate...But
I think you can see where it does take some time. It
depends on how thorough you want to be.
Don't be afraid to write the list with questions.
Good luck,
Todd Bermudez
