We know the inductive timing light is a great tool and can be used for
more than just checking the ignition timing. One thing it can't do is
detect a bad sparkplug. Unlike circuits that must ground to complete,
this light will flash even if the wire is pulled away from the plug. or
if the plug is dead. (Don't ask me why)!
Unless, of course, there is a break in the action that normally would
activate the timing light. i.e. Points that do not always close, a break
in one of the plug wires, or improper phasing under the dist. cap would
be some things to cause the timing light not to flash "on time".

Listers:
No, my thoughts are not
misfiring, I have some thoughts on misfiring....
I came across this idea
- use a timing light with an inductive pickup. Put the timing light
pickup on each plug wire in turn. If the light is erratic on one plug
wire, then that is the plug that is misfiring.
Replace and/or regap the plug and try again.
A plug wire might also
be bad. Usually this shows up under load, but I suppose it could show up
at tickover, yes?
Dave, are you listening?
Have you tried that?
