Phil,
You really should be able to remove the filter with your hand or good 
grippy glove.  When installing the new filter you should apply a coating 
of oil on the rubber gasket, turn the filter until it makes contact with 
the housing & then tighten one half to three quarters of a turn to seat. 
There's no need to over tighten the filter. The do make socket style OF 
tools that grab on the cap of the filter if it's on to tight.
