Chris---There are a couple of things that could give the temp gauge
reading you saw. The fact that it DID move to the 1/4 mark after
prolonged driving sort of indicates that a signal is being sent to the
gauge. This makes it possible that the thermostat is stuck open, and
takes a long time for the coolant to really warm up to the 1/4 mark.
(You didn't report what is "normal" for your car)
A poor connection, or a faulty sending unit, or the gauge itself, is
less likely, but possible.
