Geoff,
I think the individual differences between the cars are a bit subtle, but
added together, their sum is substantial. It's not likely there is any one
thing you need to do, but rather a series of incremental improvements. To
wit:
-Make improvements in the intake tract like porting and polishing the head.
Breathing is very important.
-Rearend gearing makes a big difference in terms of torque multiplication,
but the downside is high road RPM.
-Is you engine balanced? Makes some difference.
-Get rid of excess weight.
-The biggest difference between your cars may be aerodynamic drag, since
you say he started to pull ahead above 55 MPH. Not much you can do about
that. Horsepower helps, but like boats, it takes a lot of horsepower to
overcome drag.
Just some thoughts.
