Bruce,

I've been riding around on Miata seats (in my TR6, just to be clear...)
since last September. It can be done, it looks nice, and the seats are
pretty comfortable. My only complaint is that the squab is a bit thicker,
so you end up sitting a little higher than with the stock seats. Not a huge
deal in my case as I'm 5'10", but if I were much taller there would be
issues with the top of the windshield frame blocking vision. My seats are
from a 2000 model year car, in tan leather. Earlier seats may have a
thinner squab and sit lower, but I'm not sure.

Installation wasn't bad. There are two schools of thought: drill new holes
in the floor/frame to match the miata mounting points, or (what I did) make
adapters to mate the miata mounting points to the existing holes in the
floor. Some minor surgery is required on the miata slides - they've got a
locating dowel that has to be removed, and the ends are bent to match the
miata floor and need to be straightened. I spent probably 45 minutes with
an angle grinder, vise and big wrench to do what needed to be done,
including removing and replacing the slides to the seats. Another couple
hours was devoted to measuring, cutting, drilling and tapping the adapters
out of steel bar stock (2" wide, either 3/16" or 1/4" thick - I don't
remember, and something like 20" long). If you do the drill new holes in
the floor method, you probably can lower the seat by close to 1/2", but I
hated the idea of making new holes.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.
