Tim---Sounds like Someone put Something on the head gasket when it was
last installed?!

Couple of alternatives when using the "rope trick". Kasner once told me
he had used OIL down #2 & #5 cylinders and "hit the starter motor". He
didn't say how much oil, but I would imagine an equal amount such as 1/2
pint in each cylinder, when these two are near the bottom of their
stroke, but coming up. He admitted that there was risk of bending
something, but he didn't care. He just "wanted the damn head off."

Less stressful, would be to feed equal amounts of rope (or oil) down
each of these cylinders spark plug holes (or any other two that come up
together.) Put the tranny in gear and push the car forward. You should
feel the resistance as the ropes compress.

Less stressful yet, would be to do the above and use a rear tire to turn
the engine over "by hand".

There are more ways, but one or more of the above should get you into
enough trouble!
