Walt,

I'm about to do the same repairs on my 74. I will replace the rear cap
gasket and shaft seals but probably just live with the pinion seal leak
since you apparently can't confirm if you have the preload spacers just by
looking at them. See this note from Bob Lang on an earlier post:

"Regarding your leaky seals, the pinion seal is easy to replace, but you
need to be aware that some TR6's used a collapsible steel sleeve to set
the bearing preload on the two pinion shaft bearings. If you overtighten
the pinion flange nut on one of these diffs, you will change the bearing
preload and you will likely smoke a bearing soon after doing the job.

Unfortunately, there is no way to ID whether you have the old style or the
new style (pinion bearing preload adjustment) by visual inspection. The
early style diffs used a slotted nut and cotter pin and the later style
used a nyloc nut, but over the years it is very likely that the seal has
been replaced and that the nut was replaced with the "other" style."

It's really surprising that the Bently manual doesn't describe this repair
better.

Good luck and please share any helpful responses you get off list.

Thanks, Pat

Oh great and all knowing list.

The PO had my diff rebuilt. It seems to be operating fine, it just leaks
like a sieve. Not everywhere, just the pinion seal, shaft seals, and
gasket.
The Bentley makes seal replacement look straight forward, pretty much just
unbolt, remove seals, install new seals, tighten bolts. Is this true? I
thought I remembered some mention on the list about crushable preload
spacers on the later diffs that require special technique to adjust. Mine
is
a '74.

Thanks
