I'm actually thinking that if I can find a replacement panel that I would
like to cut it out and weld in new metal.

Ron---Hopefully, no holes are in the bulkhead under the battery. Otherwise,
you can wash the area and apply a slurry of baking soda and water, using a
stiff brush. Flush, and reapply this mix and leave it on as a deterrent for
future acid retarding.  This dried powder won't show, if covered with a
battery tray, available from TRF and other TR parts suppliers.
