Bruce---There are a few other ways to get the timing where you want it
(no pinging) and still return good power. While the timing does affect
idle speed, it shoudn't be what sets this criteria. It should be thru
throttle plate position and the fuel delivery.

Setting the timing at idle to 10deg. ATDC will certainly rob power, as
you know. Especially if this is with the ignition retard blocked off.

It's possible that your compression ratio is just too high for the fuel
you're using. If you're in the 10.0: 1 area, you may need more cam or
more octane than available at the pump. Or you can try Super 104+ Octane
Boost to lessen the pinging. Don't expect too much from this formula.

You can try the different springs in the centrifugal advance, offered in
the "Fast Road" upgrade. They should not be difficult to install.

Another easy way to control initial timing AND total advance, would be
with the MSD ignition and itsTiming Master Control. (Cockpit adjustable
timing)

Finally, you can also limit the amount of total advance that the
distributor reaches when all in, and still keep the stock setting at
idle. The explanation on how to do this is lengthy, but not hard to do.
If interested, write me off the list.
