Geoff---In my opinion, rings should take a set within the first 500
miles, when the cylinder bores are properly honed and cross-hatched.
Excess carburetion can delay this break in period, but not usually the
case with the stock ZS setup. If oil is blowing out the tail pipe, it
can show up on your bumper and tail light.
While some may say that 500 miles on a quart of oil is acceptable, I
know it's possible for a TR6 to go 2,000 on a quart of 20W-50.
Note that oil level should be checked when the engine has been stopped
for an hour or longer, for a truer reading.
