Cliff,
I cut through the rubber and "nicked" the top edge of the washer with a small
cut off disk in my dremel (invaluable tool, BTW, everyone needs one). I then
inserted a screwdriver or chisel into this nick and gave it a sharp whack with
a hammer. Works like crazy....
