Jim---It's typical of TR gearboxes being a bit harder to shift into gear
before the oil circulates a while. If it takes longer and longer to get
into gear without grinding, there's little doubt that the synchro's are
wearing out. Second gear is usually the first one to go. These synchros
are made mostly of brass, as evidenced by what you found after draining
the gearbox. There are kits available from TRF that includes these
synchros, and certainly less expensive to replace than the whole box,
even if you take out the tranny and give it to a transmission shop to do
the work. If you decide to take this course I'd also take the Bentley
manual (or other) along and offer it to the shop doing the work, to be
sure it's done to factory specs.
