Freeing up the exhaust will help, especially with the installation of the PI
cam. You will also need to re jet the carburettors, both to get better
response from the cam and also help with the mileage.

I am thinking of doing the same to my S. In New Zealand, the cars are
equipped with a different type of SU carbs - to suit the Australian
emissions regulations that were in force at the time. I am thinking of
slinging these, along with the carbon canister, and going to the English
spec version (HS6).

Another modification I have done is to fit an electronic ignition system
made by Pertronix. Available from RetroRockets in the USA. Email at
retrorockets@snet.net or visit their webpage at
http://www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/ . The results are very good,
but ensure that the correct unit is fitted - You will probably require a
unit to fit a Lucas 45D with vacuum advance.
