<DIV>broke a crank on an XPAG in the TD. Engine would start, and actually
run. Could even drive it. Broke at sort of a 45, under a main
bearing cap. Wished I had the same source for a crank as Hugh. Mine
was about a thousand bucks for starters, and then we started rebuilding the
engine after that . . . an engine supposedly rebuilt when I bought the car . .
. maybe not so much.</DIV>

accelerating) just keeps making more and more sense...

<DIV>With the 4.3 rear end, the XPAG will go around 60 at 3500 rpm. I'm
starting to think that the stress I think I hear is real stress indeed.
Along with the XPAG, I can neither tolerate the sound of a B block
"cruising" at much over 3500 rpm. I'm told I'm horribly wrong and that
the B blocks will run all day at 4400 rpm. My own ears protect me from
testing that theory. You get much over 3500 and I simply cannot stand to
listen to it. I'm no longer enjoying the drive, so why would I be
driving this car anyway?</DIV>

off or loosen the fan belt and see if you can easily move the crankshaft
pulley a few degrees in either direction. If you can the crank is
almost certainly broken. The "T" series cranks break whether the
engine has been recently rebuilt or not and breakage appears independant of
the engine overall condition. The thought is that a harmonic vibration
sets up in the crank at about 4100 rpm and finally fatigues the crank and it
breaks. With the stump pulling 5.125 rear ratio 4100 rpm is around
60mph. Do yourself a favour and change the ratio to
4.3:1.</FONT></STRONG></DIV>

60's. Picked up a used crank for $25 from a Worseley 4/44, had it
ground, picked up a complete set of bearings, pulled the motor, took off the
pan and installed the 4/44 crank. Nothing else was done. After I
had the parts this was done in less than one day and I drove the car for 10
years without any problem-mostly in the city of Sydney

If it's a bearing, why should just one bearing catastrophically
fail? I rather like the broken crankshaft theory. A friend of
mine had that happen recently with his TF. As to repair, you can always
get by for some time with a minimalist approach if you don't drive it too
hard or too much. If all you do is take it out on 40 mph club tours
- about 500 miles per year, then that might be OK. If you want it right,
do what it takes to make it right. You may have to pull and
disassemble quite a bit before you have your answer - and by that time, it
will not make economic sense to put it back together with a minimal
repair. Most of us don't want to go this way more than once...

Reno due to a horrible clatter that, after a tow back to Michigan, turned
