It was my only car for the first 2 years (69 and 70) and driven in the weather regardless of how bad it was. I have no idea how it was driven from new in 1966 but based on its condition when I bought it, I doubt it was driven in bad weather. Once put away the rust battle began culminating in a replacement frame in 1989 and finally a body tub from TX in 2008 and good fenders. The only original body panels are the "bonnet and maybe the RF Fender. It does get driven in the rain only if unavoidable but otherwise stays dry. A labor of love and at almost 79 I still enjoy driving it. I hope to continue driving it as we transition to the mountains of Western NC this summer sometime. As Don says in the Newsletter. My brother had bought a 67 Sprite to commute to Pittsburgh. They were everyday drivers and I took my drivers test in that BJ8. I remember it was real tail happy and not much of a drive in the snow car but it was anyway because it was my dad's transportation. In 69 I talked him into trading it on a Roadrunner. It wasn't much better in the snow. He found out I was drag racing it and that was the end of that ! LOL!! It got traded for a Ford LTD. Ugh. Who could possibly know what these cars would be worth today ? Back then they were just a used car after they left the lot. I remember that Plymouth dealers didn't even want that Healey on trade. Monroeville Chrysler Plymouth had us take it across the street to A&L. Phone call was exchanged and they gave $1500 on trade. > On 01/06/2025 8:24 AM EST Jay Galbreath via Wpta wrote: > > > 51 years ago I worked as a mill hunky in Homestead Works. I used as a commuter in Pittsburgh, in Bloomington, IN, and Louisville, KY, as well as West Virginia. I began a rolling restoration in the late 1980s. On one trip to Cape May, on the turnpike, the top was down and we overtook a semi hailing pigs. The smell was horrible, so I passed him. When he saw Marianne retching, he laughed and kept pace with us for his entertainment. I sped up and he sped up. Before I knew, the speedo was approaching 90 mph. I promptly slowed down and let him get far ahead of us. Cheers! On Tue, Jan 7, 2025, 10:15?AM Ed Major via Wpta wrote: > Guess it's time for my two cents worth, I bought my '58 TR3A in 1972. A couple of short adventures from the late 70s: *My first Spitfire stuck in the snow.? Tires spinning and not going anywhere.? I have an idea!? I pull the choke out enough to get the RPMs up to around 1500.? Put it in first and let the rear wheels spin.? Jump out and push from behind until the car starts to move.? Chase it down, jump in and away I go. *Doing donuts in my TR4A in Greengate Mall parking lot.? Slam into one of the concrete parking stops with left front wheel.? Appear to have bent the wheel.? It wobbles pretty bad.? A few days later, driving down the road the wheel falls off, left front hits the pavement, rusty body tub splits where front left floor pan meets rockers panels.? Ken finds car many years later in a broken down garage in Greensburg.? No, it wasn't worth restoring. *Hopped up the Spitfire with performance goodies.? Driving down four lane Rt 119 towards My Pleasant and decide to open it up to see what it will do.? Almost hit 100 per the speedo which may or may not have been accurate.? Starts making noise.? Look in rearview mirror and much smoke coming out of the back of the car.? The result was the first Spitfire engine rebuild I completed. I could go on and on but I don't want to bore everyone... After the repaint by a shop on Spring Garden Avenue, Dad purchased the car for $1800 and sold the family?s ?56 Buick for $800. He was a tough negotiator when it came to car deals. That was ?my? first Triumph, the car I drove year-round till its demise in 1965. Without those two incompetent knuckleheads who lit up Amon Olds, I might have continued to drive my then current ride, a ?51 Ford, or bought an MG, and never have met Ed Major and started what?s become The Western Pennsylvania Triumph Association. Below is a link for booking rooms online for your group. You must share the entire link for it to work. You need to instruct your group members to copy the entire link into their search bar and hit enter and the page dedicated to your group will come up. They can than enter the days they wish to attend and reserve it with their credit card. Please let me know if there are any issues. Of course they can call into the hotel to make their reservations if that works better. ***Unfortunately we cannot do a rooming list like last year as we must have a credit card on file to reserve the rooms*** * https://www.choicehotels.com/reservations/groups/MC25C2 Kindest regards, Judy Kramer Area Director of Sales (cell) 856-818-7616 salespa at wankawala.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some of you folks may remember over the years watching John Hasty vintage racing his yellow TR3A up until last year. Personally, John gave me lots of tips and build guidance when I started out vintage racing in 2013 with my TR3B. He always had a fast car and could show it on the track. We had a couple fender benders and close calls but maintained a good friendship. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: yellow04 via Fot Date: Thu, Jan 23, 2025 at 10:32?AM Subject: [Fot] Remembering John Hasty To: FOT I just found out that a couple months back we lost our resident octogenarian, John Hasty. Those of us who race the eastern part of the States have probably met him at the track, piloting a yellow TR3. John was always great fun to chat with, his extensive background in motorcycle racing usually came up in some way or another. After "aging out" on two wheels he decided it would be a better idea to race on four wheels and was still on track with us last year at the age of 88 years young! At the spring race at VIR I see he was still right in the mix, finishing 12th out of 29 runners in the Saturday race. Trying to remember when John arrived in the scene, I searched my archives. In 2011, Don Marshall nominated John and forwarded this introduction to the FOT. "I've been into racing most anything that has a motor and wheels since the 40's when in high school building hot rods. Took off a few years while in college, but beginning in 1959 bought my first sports car, an Austin Healy 3000 w/o a jump seat, next a MGB, then a Porsche 912, then a Merc 280SL, now an Alfa Spider for the street and my TR3A for the track. Crewed for a friend in the 60's with a bug-eye sprite in SCCA events then got into motorcycles. I road motorcycle road-racers for about 10 years and when I retired from riding, built and tuned 250cc GP road-racers with a rider on the AMA pro circuit for about 7 years. We did pretty well, never finished worse than 5th. in overall standings and won the national championship in 1990. My good friend Ceasar Cone got me back into sports car racing and when it came time to buy a car I decided that if I was going vintage racing I wanted a truly vintage car and I think the TR3A is a perfect truly vintage car." Our kind of people, no doubt. You will be missed, my friend... https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/33758028/john-henderson-hasty Henry Frye _______________________________________________ fot at autox.team.net http://www.fot-racing.com Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Archive: http://autox.team.net/archive http://www.team.net/pipermail/fot Unsubscribe/Manage : http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/fot/johnstydo at gmail.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
