How about north for the fall? On Saturday, October 5th, please join us for an adventure through the heart of Pittsburgh?s northern suburbs?from Gibsonia through Saxonburg and everything in between. This is a rain or shine event rescheduled from June 29th. Did you know that John Roebling, the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, is the founder of Saxonburg? We will pass by the spot where his original wire rope factory stood that churned out the cables for his early suspension bridges throughout Western PA and the Ohio valley. Starting point will be the Sheetz at the corner of Route 8 and Hardies Road in Gibsonia (5300 Route 8 Gibsonia, PA). Drivers? Meeting at 1:00 PM and first cars off by 1:15. Yes, a little later of a start than our usual runs, but our destination, the Middle Road Inn (1822 Middle Road Glenshaw, PA) only opens at 3 PM. But it?s a great place with good food and cold beer, so it should be a fun time for all! Larry Ross Membership Director -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Now I need your expert advice about the front suspension for my 1976 Spitfire. I was advised soon after purchasing this car in 2018, that shorter front springs would help lower the nose of my car. It bothered me considerably until last year when I started to address the issue. First I purchased the shorter springs and a new set of stock shocks from Moss. I did not feel confident doing this job myself, nor did my friend, Jeff, "The Triumph Whisperer", who regularly assists me with my Spitfire projects. So, our local and very trustworthy mechanic said he'd do the work. The initial result was that the car sat far too low. He advised me to get a set of adjustable shocks. He installed them also but again I was bottoming out on our lovely Pittsburgh area roads. I took it back for adjustment. The result is shown in the photos - Springs 1a and Springs 1b. Now the ride was very hard and the car would regularly make a bang sound when driving over a small ridge or hole in the pavement.? Next, I posted these 2 photos on Facebook. Maybe some of you saw them. Of course there was unanimous criticism of my mechanic's work. Some even said that these new, shorter springs are shot. Probably junk in the first place. The advice what to do next is a bit varied. Some said just adjust the shocks creating more space between the coils. The other photo shows this setup using Gaz shocks also. I've been advised by one of those Facebook commenters also to purchase stock springs since the shorter ones were for earlier and lighter cars. I'd like to know what you think. I'm certainly prepared to purchase the correct set of springs but I'm hoping that these new Gaz shocks can still be used. Thank you again. Kevin? I have adjustable shocks set at Full Soft. The earlier springs lowered the nose back down to pre-1974 ride height. Triumph put a larger spring on the front to raise the ride height to meet Federal Ride Height Standards. The internet (Facebook in particular) is generally a wealth of misinformation. Have you looked at the Triumph Experience Forum and/or the Spitfire and GT6 webpage? Within the WPTA, you have a wealth of knowledge in one Gary Fredo who has had numerous Spitfires over the years. First of all, for the most part, shocks won't increase or lower the ride height of the car.? The purpose of shocks is to dampen the ride.? So stiffer shocks make the ride harder but can also improve the handling of the car.? One exception to this are air shocks and there may be a few others that I'm not thinking of.? Are the Gaz shocks, performance shocks?? That will add to the stiffness of the ride.?? What is going on in photo #3?? The spring is completely compressed.? That is definitely incorrect.? You should have approximately 2 inches from the bottom of the shock tube to the bottom of the lower perch that the spring rides on.? It looks like the distance on your shocks are longer based on photo #2 which could be causing the issue.?? I'm guessing that there is a difference between Moss "shorter springs" and the factory springs as used on the earlier 1500 Spitfires when the ride height was lower.? The Moss "shorter springs" may be performance springs that are intended to lower the car and make it much stiffer.? I'm pretty sure Moss has a tech line that you can call and ask them if those springs were correct for what you are trying to do.? I'm guessing that the?Moss "shorter springs" are adding to the stiffness of your ride. You may need to do more research but you may find out that both the springs and shocks will need to be replaced to accomplish the ride height and stiffness that you are trying to get to.? I'm using stock springs out of a 73 Spitfire and Spax adjustable shocks on my 76 Spitfire but I prefer a harsher ride and better handling. Feel free to call me 724-378-9610 if you want to talk about it in more detail. Gary? Gary is correct that shocks don't normally effect ride height. But with the coilover pictured the ride height is adjustable. It appears that in the last photo, the mechanic adjusted the nut up to raise the ride height but this also collapsed the spring. What you are getting now is called coil clash where the spring collapses fully and becomes solid. I would venture to say that the shocks would be fine but need matched to the correct spring length and rate. Can't help you there. > On 10/02/2024 1:38 PM EDT Kevin Dadey via Wpta wrote: > > > Hello again, > > Thanks all for help on my previous issue with the leaky differential. > > Now I need your expert advice about the front suspension for my 1976 Spitfire. It has been hard to find places that will accept the group of us. They just can't find help out there. You think that anyplace would jump at the chance to have our group of fine guys and gals. We will meet at the Sheetz on 79's Mt Nebo exit at 10:00 and driver meeting at 10:15. Hope to be out of there soon after to drive thru some of the great road of Butler County. Plan to be at Ben Franklin Pub at 4270 US-422, New Castle, PA 16101 just west of US-19. For those of you who have not been here before, I am located just outside of Cranberry Twp and my street address is 329 Myome Rd. Mars, PA. Cell is 412-956-2852. I have limited parking but there is a large plan across the street and you can pull in there and park on the street. Please keep at least 50 feet in from the entrance, and please park on one side only to allow for free traffic flow. I live directly across from the entrance to this plan which is called Lakeland Estates (Lakeland Drive is the main road going in here). I will be serving lunch around noon and have various soft drinks and water. If you'd like anything alcoholic, please BYO (I hear that Bruce has a beer with breakfast??). I will appreciate you letting me know if you will be joining and how many in your party so that I can manage the food and drinks. Best if you email me directly at vicpanza at gmail.com. I have a few chairs and if you think you'll need seating, might want to bring a lawn chair. Don't hesitate to email, text or call if you have any questions. Look forward to hearing back from you and hope you can make it out. Regards, Vic -- *Vic PanzaCell: 412-956-2852* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am initially presenting it to club members to potentially keep this exceptional TR 6 in the family. I have been a member of WPTA since I bought the TR 6 in 2019, and I look forward to continuing with the club. However, I do realize that some members may not want to receive a sales email, and I understand so I have attached the details, and pictures of my 6 to this email ..... If you want to open it, please do, If not I apologize for sending this email and you can just delete it. Looking forward to hearing from any member that is interested. My contact info is below.
