Subject: [WPTA] 1500 Spitfire oil pump install

I started the process of replacing thrust washers in my 77 Spitfire this
spring and after encouragement from a Triumph Spitfire restoration and
support forum, also tried replacing main bearings and rod bearings in
place.(for better or worse). In order to access the mid-crank rod bearing
bolts, I removed the oil pump (cover plate, inner rotor, outer rotor shaft
assembly). Now that all the work is complete and the engine spins as
expected, the oil pump inner rotor and shaft will not slide fully back into
place - it fits into its slot but stops at ~ 1 - 1.5" from fully inserted.
I can see the slot at the end of the distributor assembly and a second
opening in a plate for the inner rotor and shaft to slip through which must
be blocking the shaft. The inner rotor shaft assembly spins easily. Any
ideas on what can be displaced that won't allow the shaft to completely
slide into place would be helpful. Nothing was moved or loosened at the
distributor - I only worked on the lower end to replace thrust washers and
main plus rod bearings. Some pics attached.

 From looking at the repair manual and parts manual it looks like it should slide right in.? It's been a long time since I've had an oil pump out of a Spitfire engine.? Probably 30 years so mostly going by memory which isn't too good.? Anyway, you mentioned below that "nothing was moved or loosened at the distributor".? Actually you spun the camshaft and the distributor when you spun the crankshaft.? I think the oil pump shaft slot (at the bottom of the distributor) is slightly off center so you may have to spin the oil pump shaft 180 degrees to get them to line up.? That's about all I can think of right now.

I?d pull the distributor and see if the pump will then fit. And then place the distributor back into the engine.

 Thanks to everyone that volunteered to count ballots during British Car Day but I still need two more ballot counters for the 1:30 - 3:00 time slot.? Counting the ballots is pretty easy as it mostly consists of inputting numbers into a spreadsheet.? I will provide easy instructions before you get started and I will be close by the entire time in case any issues come up.? The bonus to ballot counting is that if the day is hot then you get to spend some time under a tent and many trees where it is nice and cool.? Conversely, it its raining, you will get to spend some time under a dry tent!

 Yeah, I had to go through a sobriety checkpoint on the way home last year from Rock Bottom.? The officer asked me where I was coming from.? When I told him Rock Bottom he replied that I couldn't of had more than one maybe two beers at that place due to the slow service.? So he sent me on my way.
There's also a Dave and Buster's or a Primanti's nearby that we could go to although they probably aren't much better.

I recently purchased an Amererx 2.5lb Halotron I, Class BC fire extinguisher.  It's a little pricy, but I thought it was a pretty good size for the car.  I thought about mounting it behind the seats of my spitfire, but I finally opted for mounting it in the trunk.

Mounted on a piece of plywood so can sit on the shelf behind front seat and not roll around.
Can?t remember what type though it said good for all types of fires and won?t damage electrical and available at local hardware store.
Two years ago going to PVGP traffic on Fifth was at a stand still so I parked at my son?s apartment and walked.
Traffic was backed up because a 50?s T-Bird was on fire and heavily damaged. The owner was on the sidewalk... really distraught. 
My first purchase for the TR6 was this fire extinguisher.

I've seen fire blankets also but can't testify to ease of use or
effectiveness. Seems like they'd be less obtrusive but...

lol - finally fund a youtube video and saw that the oil pump housing should
have come off when assembly screws were removed. Something else is holding
it in place but a well placed bump with a rubber mallet aligned things
nicely. Glad I don't charge myself by the hour! ha ha

current problem seems to be solved and on to the next. Gotta get the
Spitfire up and running before PVGP!

Look in your repair manual page 12-1.? This should be the first page in the Engine section.? Look at the picture in the lower right corner of page 12-1.? That picture shows three parts.? 1. the top is the gear and slot that the distributer fits into.? This is one part.? The gear is turned by a gear on the camshaft.? 2. The lower shaft fits into the oil pump.? This is the oil pump drive and it is connected to the top part with a pin through the upper area of the shaft.? The little circle on the left side of the shaft just above the gear in the photo represents the pin that holds the two parts together.? 3.? There is a washer below gear.
Don't remove the part (2 pieces as described above) with the gear as it needs to be put back in the exact position that it was removed.? The procedure is explained on page 12-2 starting with step #11.?
So looking back at the photo on page 12-1, you can see where we are confused.? The only fixed collar that I can see would be the washer.? But if the lower shaft (#2 above) is in place then there is no way that could move out of place.? Likewise I don't think the oil pump shaft would even reach that washer ever if the lower shaft (#2 above) was in place..
Is the lower shaft (#2 above) still in place or did it come out when you removed the oil pump?
Also email me any pictures that you have as my flip phone doesn't do a very good job of showing pictures.

 Went back to the original email and saw that you did send pictures.? It looks like the top half of the oil pump housing is still in the engine block.? So the problem is probably something inside the oil pump that isn't letting you slide it all the way in.
Look on page 12-55 and 12-56 in the repair manual which will explain how to put the pump back together.

 Well, I could probably use one of those engine stands since I'm planning to rebuild the Spitfire engine soon.? Only issue is that I probably can't get it until after all the PVGP/BCD festivities are over which would be 7/24/23.

Ok Folks, I have a special request.

I have a neighbor that is an avid car guy, and looks forward to the PVGP
every year.
Unfortunately, I heard from his wife early this week that Kevin has been
going thru treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and will not be able to attend
the car show on Saturday.  I have been in touch with his wife Susan, and
since they can not make it to the PVGP on Saturday, I have decided to take
some cars to him on Thursday night!!

If anyone is around Washington, and has a few hours on Thursday night to
join me - we are going to meet at my house around 6:45 - 7:00pm, and then
leave here and drive down the street to the cul de sac.  Any / all cars are
welcome to join us!!

Also - if anyone has an extra program from the car show on Tuesday that we
could leave with him - please bring it along.

My location is 567 Warrick Drive Washington PA. - we can stage on the
street and go from there.

Thanks in advance if you are able to attend, and if not - please send
prayers and good vibes to Kevin and Susan!!

Shoot me a message if you think you are able to attend - so I have an idea
of who/what to expect!!

  Hi Everyone,

Tomorrow's the big day and we're getting the field ready tonight. If you're
helping out with setup tonight, we're going to start at 5:00 near the tree
on the course where we set up the tent and do the awards from. For anyone
new coming, we'll be on the other side of the street from the Bob O'Connor
clubhouse at the top, where the course gets somewhat flat.

For tomorrow, we do still need some people for flagging and tent teardown
and other things if you can help. I've attached a link to the signup form.

 ? I don't know who suggested this run, but about 9 miles north of the ferry on rte. 7 in Hannibal Ohio, up rte 536, is a small overlook named Kiedaisch Point Park.? The view both up and down the Ohio river is beautiful from this high vantage point. The parking lot is at the end of a narrow bumpy dead end road. Other than a couple of benches and a picinic table, the view is all you get. Still if you like seldom seen places, this qualifies.? Worth the drive.

Appreciate the feedback but the problem truly is about this lower unit
housing shifting somehow and not allowing the oil pump rotor shaft to slide
up and into a corresponding fixed collar where the gear below the
distributor sits. I have tried to include better pics to illustrate. I have
pulled the distributor to merely confirm this problem. The rotor shaft
should slide up until almost flush with the top of this housing to meet the
bottom blade of the dizzy gear assembly.

Anyone know how this lower assembly is attached?

Left front wheel bearing was destroyed and stub axle is damaged and I need to replace it any advice on how to go about this would be helpful.
It looks to be pressed into the vertical link and then of course, with a knot on the end. Appreciate the help.

When rebuilding front suspension and installing new hubs I removed vertical link with axle. One side tapped out easily with a little heat. Had to take the other side to a local shop where they used a hydraulic press to get it out.

 In my experience, best to remove the upright for pressing out the stub shaft. Remove the nyloc nut from the inner end of the spindle while the upright is still in the car. After stripping the upright, run a 1/2-20 hex nut (not nyloc) onto the inner end of the spindle and run it down flush with the end of the spindle. this will support the threads during pressing and keep the spindle from flying out when it breaks loose. in the press, apply pressure to the inner end of the spindle and hex nut. If you have a lot of pressure on the ram and the spindle isn't moving, tap the upright sharply with a hammer and drift in a horizontal direction before cranking up the pressure.?

The run will be this Saturday 8/5/23! We will meet at the Bilo Gas  N Go Rt. 19 Zelienople exit 88 off of Rt. 79.
   Driver?s meeting at 10:00 and depart at 10:30! We will be taking some winding back roads north through Portersville and Slippery Rock to Harrisville. Bathroom break/gas stop at the Sheetz in Harrisville. Continue north through scenic back roads past the Bugle Point

Elk Farm on to Kennerdell on the Allegheny River. The run will continue on through Clintonville and Grove City to end at Timbercreek Tap and Table, all on Rt. 208W on the right after the Grove City Outlets.
