?I have a 66 2.0L gt6 long engine, turns over, slightly excessive crank end play approx .012?.
I have 2 (were) complete TR6 engines torn down, 1 crank cut,  and end played out. 
1 is a 69 TR6 and 1 is a 72 TR6.   69 had a gt6 rotating  assembly (bad crank) and Std. Bore and the 72 has a TR6 crank and .020? over pistons.      72 has a good head that needs guides     ( whole head freshened), the 69 had a once 3.300?head cut so thin they went through the water jacket. Assorted parts that made them up. 
If anyone is looking for any parts from them let me know.

 HughAfter a couple of years you know by now these jems require more maintaintenance than modern cars.That being said you are looking at a car several decades older than your current ride.Cost versus condition boils down to your skills and pocketbook.I just read that anything that can cast a shadow can be restored, so what you can't do, prepare to pay to have done.Rust is the big culprit. Examine inner and outer rockers. The frame is generally robust.Many "improvements" may have been done over the years. Try to get a list or understanding of what's been done.Most mechanical bits are comprable to your Spit in price and availability.After 24 years I still enjoy my "1960 driver".Happy hunting.Tom

I echo what Tom said.My 71 MGB and I do well. I understand most of and have worked on many of the components which has kept my cost down and smiles per mile high.I had the opportunity to rescue a 47 MG TC and it proved out of my realm. Every bolt was seized, every fluid line, clog or cracked. I tired or the relentless labor and passed her on to someone with more time, patience, and ability.

The best advice that is generally given is to buy the best car you can afford and go from there. Or as a dearly departed member once said. If you find a rust bucket you think you can restore; buy it junk it and go buy a restored car. You'll be dollars ahead.

Hi Hugh. Just one more observation?. I agree completely with Tom and Bob but would add that in my case, I bought a 1958 TR3A a few years ago that had been totally restored and won two National First Place AACA Awards In 1996 and 2004. I paid 40,000 for this beauty.  My assumption was that this was very drivable and relatively trouble free.  I wanted to drive this car, not show it. I love TRs and drove them as my only car for many years. But I never had a 3.   Rust was a big problem with my 4A, but I drove it anyway, snow tires and all. Back to the restored 3A, even though I paid up to get a ?restored? version, it has taken considerable time and effort to get it totally drivable, which it is now. And boy is it fun to drive.  Unfortunately, show cars are not necessarily good drivable cars. My advice is just what Bob and Tom have said.  Try to find one in good shape, but don?t expect that it will be reliably drivable without some TLC and a few additional bucks.

Best advice I received from Ken Mikos when looking to add a TR6 after
owning a Spitfire for one year was to get the best car my budget could
afford and not look for a bargain, unless I was specifically looking to do
a restoration. Took his advice and have enjoyed the car every moment as the
previous owner completed all the restoration. Ken was dead on that the cost
and time spent in restoration would be time lost enjoying the driving
experience, and likely much more expense than expected.

Some do want the challenge and satisfaction of a good restoration project,
and turn out beautiful results but they generally agree with Ken's
prediction on time and cost.

Like Chuck Noll said, get the best athlete available.... Personally I 
would spend more for a show quality vehicle, mechanics are easily 
fixable and a lot cheaper than body work and paint. I always go by the 
adage that anything you buy be prepared to spend at least a 500 to a

Or sandwich bag and rubber band.?I have personally never had an issue.??I do however put mice magic packets in the interior and motor bay.They have a peppermint odor that rodents and insects hate.Just my 2 centsTim

I agree with the thought process on getting the best car that you can find
, however I have found that the show cars in my opinion are not the best
way to go ( they look nice yes but that's about it) find a good driver and
you will be much happier . look up Pat Davis in the club he has a few tr3s
one grand champ and I believe he is going to sell a nice looking driver .

 Good to hear that you are both feeling good/great.? Probably doing better than I was a week or so ago.? Tested negative for covid but was up all night sick.? Wiped me out for a few days.?  You can see many pictures and video by doing an internet search on "The Roadster Factory fire".? It looks like a total loss.? A real shame.? Fortunately, per the Fire Chief, there were no injuries other than some minor stuff.? Having been on the TRF tours, I don't know how you would rebuild the place.?
