No Meeting Meeting by Gary Fredo
The No Meeting Meeting, is scheduled for Saturday December 17th from 1:00 to 4:00 at Sports Grille 1294 Freedom Road, Cranberry Twp 16066.
This is a great event for members to mingle and bench race. This is also a good time for new members to get to know some of the members that have been around for a while. We?re a friendly bunch so just ask someone about their car or mention an issue you are having with your car as a way to introduce yourself. Works every time.
Note that the Sports Grille uses the little symbol that you scan with your smart phone to get a menu although I think they can rustle up a hard copy menu for anyone that can?t get their phone to scan the symbol. Or you can look up their menu on-line at www.thesportsgrillecranberry. com.
They get busy on Saturday afternoons during football season so, if you arrive hungry then you should order early.

All,
I am trying to replace the U joints on the diff side of the propeller shaft on a GT6.  After installing the U joint, I pressed both ends in as far as they would go.  I can insert the retaining clip on one side, but not on the other. It seems I only need a very tiny fraction of an inch of clearance to get the clip in but can?t get it in.

Eventually after pressing extremely forcibly with the C  clamp tool the cup failed on the opposite end.  I going to take it apart to see if I had some trash or a needle bearing in the bottom of the cups but I?ll likely find nothing. 

What am I doing wrong?

Greetings and happy holidays to all.? After much trepidation about the weather today, I took my TR3A to Calibro Tire? for an alignment as recommended by club members who had been there.?? Naturally they didn't have a driver of the proper caliber to fit into my car, so I was directed to drive the car onto the rack.?? After the initial left/right left/right signal I was given the big STOP!? A crowd of techs formed looking at the alignment of my car and the rack. They came to the conclusion that my car's tires would both hang over the both edges of the device, and would not fit over the jacks. Plus, they added, the ramps were slippery.?? Perhaps, if I signed a waiver....? Needless to say, NO alignment.? Apparently a mere 3 or 4 years ago they got a new, larger alignment rack to fit the newer cars and trucks.? Just a public notice, no malice intended.?? TR4 and up may fit, but check before you make that appointment.

All you can align with a stock TR3 front end is the toe in/out and steering
wheel.  Toe plates and two tape measures are all you need.  Check for worn
or loose parts otherwise.

Make sure you have the correct U-joint for the car.? You probably do but compare it with the old one just to be sure.? Look for any burrs on the prop shaft where the U-joints go in.? Use sockets and a vise to press everything together.? Make sure everything is straight as you press them together.? Don't get too crazy with how much pressure to use.? If they stop moving but they aren't far enough in then take them apart and start over.? Use grease to keep the rollers in place.
If you get really frustrated then Pgh Driveshaft can replace them for you.? They are fairly reasonable priced.

I?ve always used a magnesium board (like what you use for concrete) to
align the front with the rear then measure over to the other side to get it
straight. Always worked pretty good for me. Good luck

All,
I recently gapped a new set of points to .015 mm, on the Spitfire then wanted to check the dwell angle.  My son and I checked the dwell this afternoon and found it to be slightly out of spec at 42.3 degrees. Spec shows 40-42 degrees. 

Does one take the vacuum advance hose off so it is a ?true? angle measurement?  Mine is connected and visually pulls a vacuum on the distributor.  Is this small amount mean there should be less or more of a gap?

I think your measurement is in inches, not mm.  Vacuum line has to do with
ignition timing, not dwell angle, so there shouldn't be a change in the gap
unless your points plate is worn out.  I'd say your setting is spot on for
a Spitfire.
