When I raced at Schenley Park a few years ago, Tom was teamed up with Paul
O'Malley (recently deceased) who drove that TR4.  Paul was a very tall man
and required a very tall rollbar in the car, which may have saved Tom from
injury.

That area of Ohio is very familiar to me and I?ve spent a LOT of time around there over the past 40 years.

 

So, I have to suggest/recommend Marietta as the overnight stop.  Smaller town, but still a college town.  Stay at the Lafayette Hotel and be with easy walking distance of a micro-brewery & restaurant, as well as several other bars & restaurants.  Plenty of great roads in very close proximity to Marietta and pretty much zero traffic to contend with to get to them.

 

We could run 555 from Zanesville to it?s end, at route 7.  Then, west on 7 for a few miles, to Tuppers Plains.  From there, 639(?) twists and plunges down to the (Ohio) river, then we could run rt. 124 back up almost to Marietta.  I need to dig my DeLorme Atlas of Ohio out to be sure of all the route numbers.

 

Athens is a bit too ?busy? and ?woke? for me.   Marietta is still a small ?river town? and seems to run at a more relaxed pace.  And there is a lot to be said for being able to walk between our hotel and a brewery, bars, restaurants, etc. rather than try to drive in an unfamiliar town.

 

Whatever you guys decide to do, I?m sure it will be great fun and I hope my work schedule will let me join you.

You have not heard much from me about a planned WPTA Summer trip to WV and VA. I?m writing to those who responded and our those who may be interested. And if I have left someone out please forward this and include them if you think they may be interested.

 

I could not bring the WV and VA trip together for a lot of reasons but I?ve planned an alternative for August 18 and 19 much closer to home and one overnight stay.

 

Ohio has Ohio 555 from Zanesville, OH south to the Ohio river and I?ve heard it?s a favorite of the Motorcycle crowd. Google Ohio 555 and you?ll find some good information about the Triple Nickel.

 

Here?s my plan. We can all meet in Zanesville at 11:00 am on the 18th and run 555 as far south as we want. I need to study the map a bit closer. Maybe Mapman aka Bruce can look at the route in detail with any suggestions as we will stay in Athens, OH overnight. Athens is a college town so it must have some decent bars for our after run Beer and Bull on the 18th. 555 does not go into Athens but we can cut off and go through the Wayne National Forest to Athens.

 

On the 19th we can run north again using back roads of our choosing to get home. Likely some good routes north or run 555 for return. That will get planned.

 

As for accommodations; there are several Motels in Athens and I?ll do more research on those once a participation count is firmed up.

 

So let me know your intentions ASAP and pick a roomie and we can go from there.

I just read your email. I?m in. I think I might drive up to Zanesville the day before as it?s about 4 hours from me. That would be a long first day of driving if I left home on the 18th.
I?m on the fence about the drive back to Zanesville, I may just head back to Cincinnati the morning of the 19th but I?ll see how I feel then.

 ? Unsure if I can make it as I am headed to Watkins Glen on the 20th. Sounds like a good venue. May I suggest Muskie's big Bucket display McConnelsville appx. 9 miles east off of Rte 555 on Rte 37. Google it if unfamiliar impressive photo op.? Other curvaceous roads east of I77 however, are: Rte 26N, 800, and 536. Rte. 26 follows The Little Muskingum River and passes 3 covered bridges. I have just started exploring this part of Ohio (patooey) and am loving it except the hour drive to get there.? Please keep us informed

The 2022 Kastner Cup will be held in conjunction with the 40th annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, America?s longest running vintage street race. The Kastner Cup will occur on July 15-17, 2022 at the PVGP Historic Races at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex (Pitt Race - www.pittrace.com). Pitt Race is located in Wampum PA on a 427 acre road race and karting facility located 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The road course is 2.8 miles in length, with 19 turns, a 36 foot-wide racing surface, and 110 feet of elevation change. The track is fast and challenging with extensive runoff areas, two long straights, and acres of paved paddocks.

The PVGP Historic Race schedule will include practice and qualifying on Friday July 15th, a qualifying race and the Kastner Cup Race on Saturday, July 16th, and the Kastner Cup Reunion Race on Sunday July 17th. A test and tune day is available on Thursday July 14th. The following weekend, the Grand Prix returns to race through Pittsburgh?s beautiful Schenley Park. Participants in the Kastner Cup have the option to run both the PVGP Historics and PVGP in Schenley Park. Racers who enter both weekends may store race car trailers at the PittRace facility.
2022 will mark the 20th running of the Kastner Cup. The race will celebrate the 70th year of Triumph sports car in competition. The Kastner Cup was named in recognition of the career accomplishment and legacy of R.W. "Kas" Kastner who passed away on April 11, 2021 at the age of 92. Kas Kastner was one of the most influential individuals responsible for the racing success of Triumph sports cars from the late 1950?s through 1970 and beyond. To this day, his series of Competition Preparation Manuals are a must read for competitors in Triumph sports cars. Later in his career, Kastner directed the Nissan IMSA GTP team that won the manufacturers? championship three years in a row and the drivers? championship four years in a row; a remarkable achievement.

The Kastner Cup has become a major event on the vintage racing calendar for British car fans. The race is held at a different track each year to provide Triumph racers across the country a chance to compete for the Cup. Open to race prepared Triumph powered cars, the Kastner Cup is awarded to one competitor based on the following criteria:
? 50% for the competitive results on the race track during the event (not necessarily the winner)

? 25% for the presentation of the car
? 25% for the attitude and interest in Vintage racing

The 2021 Kastner Cup was awarded to Jeff Quick of Kent Washington. Mr. Quick drove his beautiful 1967 TR4A. He was also awarded the Peggy Kastner Performance Award in the TR4 and TR4A Class.

The Kastner Cup is organized by members of the Friends of Triumph (FOT). FOT is a group of vintage racers dedicated to preserving the racing heritage of the Triumph marque. Campaigning these automobiles on the track is at the essence of why FOT was organized. A 2022 Kastner Cup Race Committee is being assembled and volunteers are being recruited. To date, Curt Johnston will be the Committee Chair, Joe Alexander will be the Grand Marshal, and FOT members include Shawn Frank and John Linney. A section of Millers Run Road, between Bridgeville and Cuddy is closed.
Easy to get around by turning right on Morgan Hill Road, followed by a left
onto Cuddy Lane.  Cuddy Lane will take you back to Millers Run Road, where
you will turn left, then drive around the barrier and into McClelland's
parking lot.
