"SOS '09 the Erection" will take place this Saturday and Sunday in
Princeton, WI. Among many other things, we'll be erecting a MaxJax lift in
the shop.

In years past we've had "SOS Idgets with Spridgets", and "SOS The Winter of
Our Discontent", amongst other themes. SOS stand for "Save Our Sprites" or
"Save our Spirdgets" Basically, like minded Austin Healey Spite and MG
Midget owners descend on my shop over a 2-3 day period and work on,
assemble, dismantle, tune cars. Often it's been a couple of cars that an
owner couldn't finish by himself, or lacked the tools or skills to complete.
We gather up in teams depending on the number of projects, and get to it.
This year, my own projects... move to a new shop, has gotten the attention. 

 

"SOS" is an offshoot of "OSHIT", (Organized Sprite Handymen In Transit",
which started out on the East Coast. We've had people fly in or drive great
distances to attend. We've had as many as 20 attendees each day, although
this event will be smaller. usually we hold SOS the Fri. & Sat. after
Thanksgiving. 

 

The event will be broadcast via Yahoo Messenger in real time, with the
ability for the viewing audience to watch via webcam speak to us in real
time. To view the broadcast, add "floundervision" to your contact list on
Yahoo Messenger. You'll be invited to a conference Sat & Sun.If you have a
mic, you can speak to us. Please do not ask us to view your camera... but
you're welcome to view ours.

After many years have found a product that works!  "LA's Totally Awesome"
available in concentrate form at "Dollar Store", not at other Dollar Tree or
simular names outlets.  Recommended by fellow racer, ask him how he kept his
trailer so clean, answer, once cleaned with Awesome then power wash roof once
a month and the streaks won't return.  By the way I went to local store bought
every bottle on the shelf, all 20 at $1 each. It works!!

diluted the cleaner (5 parts water to 1 part concentrate) you might have to
experiment a little.

I use Castrol Super Clean.  It does wonders taking off that black stuff. 
You need to dilute it in a bucket then use a long handled brush to apply
it.

my best resolve with my trailer (haulmark) is "simple green" diluted in the
wash bucket and sprayed directly on the serious black streaks (mine's white
exterior) coming from the roof.   i'm considering painting my roof skin to
stop the serious acid rain sreaking from the roof skin washing down the sides?
any thoughts along this line?    my trailer's roof was reskined after haulmark
found a problem with screw heads rubbing through the skin.   so my roof skin
is not as old as my trailer's title would indicate.  but i'd like to not have
my trailer look like a refugee from a 1950's trailer park.  so trying to get
it to a lower state of maint. would please me greatly.   i'm told by a friend
who drives big trucks over the road that waxing after a good washing would
preserve the finish for a greater time.   however haulmark's literature states
that there is (or was when new) a factory coating to preserve the finish on
the outer skin.   what would work on that  treatment if after time still
exists?   any ideas gang?

Took the Turner to a dyno shop.  I'm underwhelmed at the results -- only 60
rear-wheel h.p., & 50 ft.lbs. torque.  Interestingly, the HP curve, is flat
(but rising steadily) from 3200 rpms all the way to 6200 rpms.  And, I mean
FLAT.  It climbs from c. 25HP at 3200 straight up to 60 at 6300.

Torque curve is flat & level from 4000 to max.

Another interesting observation -- going from a 1-3/4" straight pipe to a
reducer to 1-1/2" & then through the original muffler increased the H.P. by
a little over 2 HP.  This is on a 948 that is now c. 1,000 cc with APT
Vintage cam, flat-top pistons, 1-1/2" SUs, & Longman GT6 big-valve head.
Based on results, it will need a better crank to take advantage of the still
climbing power "curve."

Now comes the engine swap to the ex-HP Huffaker engine & back to the dyno
shop with that one.

Any of you Spridget guys had your cars on a dyno?  What results?

To all of you guys who suggested Simple Green -- my sincere thanks.

I have a 4 oz. sample bottle that I picked up at the PRI show or SEMA 3 or 4
years ago.  Been sitting in a cabinet since.  Did a 1-foot sq. section.
Holy cow!  The trailer is white!

Thanks to the generosity of my neighbor who is a long time race fan I have
been scanning copies of his old race programs. Karen has agreed to let me
post them on the Oregon Region site. So far I have uploaded the first two
Rose Cup programs (61 & 62) and one Seafair program. Check the site from
time to time as I have several more through the 709s and 809s to scan.

I have had the pleasure of racing with Doug Bruce at Blackhawk (VSCDA) and
Hallett (CVAR).  Doug is in his second year of vintage racing and exhibits

Tommy Walco and Will Beecher were both mechanics at one point or another for the first known owner of my Lotus Seven. Tommy was last known to be in Blawenburgh, NJ and Will somewhere in Vermont.
Any leads appreciated -- In fact, they were around at the time of Ray Walle's "The Little Foreign Car Shop" -- if anyone has any info about that I'd love to hear about it too!
