To commemorate this illustrious 100 year anniversary the Rose Cup Races and trophy sponsor AAA of Oregon/Idaho bring back the Wemme Trophy for Saturday, June 13th's Vintage Race. Don't miss the fun. On June 12,1909, an automobile race was organized by the Portland Auto Club and sanctioned by AAA. The race was a prominent feature of the Portland Rose Festival, then in its third year. A wealthy Portland businessman named E. Henry Wemme sponsored the race. Wemme had imported the city9s first automobile, a Stanley Steamer, in 1899. Later, he would own the city9s first Oldsmobile, the first Reo, and the first Pierce-Arrow. The race was called the Wemme Trophy in his honor. The race track ran east on Division St. to 223rd St. northbound, then west on Stark St. and south on 96th Ave., which is now a frontage road for I-205. The winning average speed was 58.792 MPH, which would be a pretty fast trip on those roads even today! A total of 30,000 spectators turned out around the course to see the race, with track security provided by 200 members of the Oregon National Guard. Of the fourteen entrants, ten finished the race. Amazingly, only one car crashed - an Auburn driven by Harry Cohen. The race winner was 24 year old Bert Dingley, driving his Keats Auto Company Chalmers-Detroit 40. Reports from the race said that Dingley waved at the crowd each time he came by the stands. Victory here in Portland helped Dingley claim the first ever AAA national driving championship, and he was among the first class of drivers inducted into the Automobile Racing Hall of Fame in 1966. To celebrate the centennial of that first Rose Festival auto race, we're bringing back the Wemme Trophy as part of the 49th annual Rose Cup races presented by Temp-Control Mechanical, and AAA Oregon/Idaho is once again the Wemme Trophy sponsor. Starting this year, the Wemme trophy will be perpetual, recognizing 100 years (and counting) of Rose Festival racing, and it will be awarded to a driver from the SCCA Vintage race each year at the Rose Cup. As the Vintage grid is not a race for position, the recipient of the trophy will be selected by the Rose Cup Auto Race Committee each year. The trophy winner will be decided based on Saturday9s race, and the trophy will be awarded at the end of the day at the Rose Cup Cruise- In, where hundreds of classic car enthusiasts will cheer the deserving driver. Then on Sunday, the second Vintage race of the weekend will be dedicated to honor the memory of Sam Egli. Sam was a respected race driver and an SCCA racing official. His beautiful red Porsche 356 coupe will be driven on a parade lap just prior to Sunday9s race, while the SCCA flagging and communications workers wave every flag they9ve got to show their admiration and affection for their departed Friend. The vintage group has two sessions on Friday and Saturday with a final Race on Sunday. -- David Franks franks97 at verizon.net 67 AH Sprite #82 Blue From turbo at at-speed.com Mon Jun 8 10:17:51 2009 From: turbo at at-speed.com (Stefan Vapaa) Date: Mon, 8 Jun 2009 12:17:51 -0400 Subject: [Vintage-race] Photos from VSCCA event at VIR Message-ID: <497ded220906080917q75dce36bs3dc3c67e1f2f40d7@mail.gmail.com> These are my pictures from the VSCCA event at VIR back in the middle of May. http://photos.at-speed.com/gallery/8318736_afhPZ Enjoy! Message-ID: <8CBB78D62774728-DA8-22B0@webmail-dh36.sysops.aol.com> All: Sorry, this isn't vintage racing related, but could be of interest to you! DO NOT USE CFL light bulbs in your garage door opener (at least not Genie openers).??? I put some in mine months ago to save energy and get brighter light with lower power.? They worked for a while, then one day I noticed the opener "humming".? I touched it and it was red hot!?? The motor windings had heated up and were dripping melted insulation out of the opener.? I pulled the plug and let it cool down and tried it.? It worked twice, then quit.?? I figured it was just old, and needed replacement.? WRONG, it was the CFLs!? (I had some suspicion they might not work as they don't work with most dimmers or circuits that don't use an actual switch or relay to turn them on). I bought and installed a new Genie opener and called Genie's 800 number just to check if CFLs would be OK in it.? They said, "ABSOLUTELY NOT!? If you do, the opener will try to run and burn itself out!"? (exactly what mine did).?? Turns out, the opener uses electronic switching and not relays to turn on the light bulbs.? This circuit is like a dimmer and IS NOT compatible with most CFL bulbs.? I even used bulbs that were supposed to be dimmable, but it still ended up frying the electronics.? When that goes, so does other parts of the circuit that drives the motor and tries to run it a lower power.? It can't actually turn and just ends up heating up until it fails.?? I'm glad I caught mine before it caught fire.? It was VERY HOT!? I was surprised the thermal overloads hadn't stopped it. Tell everyone you know, DO NOT PUT CFL bulbs in your garage door opener!?? Pass it on, PLEASE. Regards, Myles H. BY A DO-IT-YOURSELFER: DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings objects across the room, denting that freshly-painted Mustang fender which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench at the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh sh*t' ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age. SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race. TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as leather seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use. DAMMIT TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'DAMMIT' at the top of your lungs. I have raced a pre-war car here, the Ardent Alligator, A fairly big car, XK120 and a smallish car MGA and had an absolute blast in all of them. I have ground my teeth flat as director of competition watching a knot of 15 FFords heading for the downhill turn 1 and grinned ear to ear as Camaro, Mustang, Porsche come cresting over the hill sweeping onto the back straight flat-out for all they are worth. And as a director the good feeling I get watching you when you realize how much YOU and your car meant not just to the other racers or even the spectators but to the people we are here racing for to raise money for our charities. The smile on their faces and the joy that we bring to so many with the monies we raise that is just beyond words and so many racers I have met over the 19 years I have been part of PVGPA, say the same thing I do "if I could only do one event a year, this would be it) So come be a part of this unique event. The biggest vintage spectacle in United States (and yes I can say that because we run over two weekends and a week of special events. PVGPA events span the range of race cars on the track to the longest continues running street race, some of the largest cars shows in the east, Black Tie Gala, rally, Cruising and more. From Pre-War (and I mean WWI) to 2004 BMW racers PVGPA and its races cover it all. So come on out and play - For more information and the latest breaking news on BeaveRun Historics go to www.cloverleaf-auto.com and click the vintage race button, then the BeaveRun picture for information on the PVGPA Schenley Park event go to www.pvgp.org Thanks and see you there Ralph Steinberg PVGPA Director of Competition BeaveRun
