It was 1.7 miles and used part of a small stock car oval. Located just south of Md Route 5 on 301. The facility is still there (at least it was about 1 1/2 years ago when I last looked), but hidden by trees and undergrowth. A shopping center with a Giant is just north of the track now. More track per acre than the Shenandoah Circuit. This clip is of a Trans-Am race, probably 1967, when the series was just taking off. You can see red Bud Moore Cougars with Cale Yarborough as one of the drivers, the blue #6 Camaro entered by Roger Penske and driven by Mark Donahue, pale yellow and a bright yellow Mustangs entered by Carroll Shelby, etc. The moviemaker was standing on a hillside out side of the Marlboro property and thus didn't have to pay an entry fee. Gordon's footage has provided some very rare and never seen footage of 4 different cars we are restoring for vintage racing and his footage of the 72 trans-am and formula 5000 footage showed us the rare BRE lotus ford that was wrecked the day after the film was shot and no one had known there was footage of it racing. Plus we found that the car actually still exists and is presently being restored in northern cal. This was a fantastic treat at the BRE reunion we held in October in So Cal and we had all but one of the original team members and some earlier employees that had left Shelby when Peter Brock started BRE. We are presently editing 6 hr of footage down to a 2 1/2 hour DVD of the dinner event. The projects we have are 4 Datsun 2000 roadsters including the first ever BRE 2000 built for Frank Monise and later John McComb then sold to Gene Felton and thankfully this car is well documented and we have quite a bit to go off for the resto. The second car is the 1969 AARC Daytona 2 nd place finishing car of Dan Parkinson who later had 2 other datsuns roadsters 1 of which was the factory lightweight which was sold to Doc Herman in Ohio and 2 of these 3 are documented but info on the 3 rd remains elusive. The 3rd car although not as well known was the John Coen/Dave Eagleson 1968 2000 which originally came from Bob Sharp and was 6 th at 69 daytona and 5th in 70 Road Atlanta and 8th in 1973 at Road Atlanta but it was 73 that interests us most because that year they ran the car painted silver with flames painted on the front and we are trying to find some Photos for the resto and there are some great video shots of it spinning twice at RA we cannot make out the flames well enough for the final decision. We are also trying to find photos and info on the Dave Madison b-sedan datsun 510 or see if anyone knows if Dave is still around. This brings me to asking if anyone knows if any of the following old time race photographers are still out there as we have some photo copies of their photos and would like to purchase the originals so here are some names from the past off the back of old photos. Terry Knickerbocker(maybe in oregon area) Thomas J Kravitz (area unknown) Dick Kast/ Action Photos ( Indianapolis Ind at least in 72) D Y Muramatsu (southern Cal I think) We have some neat photos from all of these guys and need some help finding them. I installed one on an old Ford tractor last year and it worked a treat until yesterday. Now I have a yellow spark where there was once a blue one and it will not start. Can the Pertronix unit do this? Most electronic devices either work or they don't. I've been running a Pertronix in my 67 Shelby Trans Am for 12 years with not a single problem. - Regards -------------- Walt Boeninger walt at boeninger.net webmaster at norcal-saac.org http://shelbytransam.com From ssteers at comcast.net Sat Feb 28 10:16:42 2009 From: ssteers at comcast.net (Steve Steers) Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:16:42 -0600 Subject: [Vintage-race] Pertronix In-Reply-To: <002f01c999c6$d56ec2f0$804c48d0$@net> Message-ID: <001201c999c8$53a98fa0$3258fea9@desktop> Don, When mine went bad, the car would start and run for about 4 seconds, then quit abruptly. After a few minutes, it'd do the same thing again. I thought it was a fuel problem at first, but that all seemed fine. So I replaced the coil, no different. To isolate it to ignition, I hooked up a timing light, pointed it at my face and got it started, holding the engine at about 3 grand with the strobe flashing in my eyes. At exactly the same moment the engine quit firing, the light went out. Then I knew it was a distributor problem. I put the points back in and it ran fine. I am still blind, however. Sometimes I just can't stop myself...My mom always said, "If you haven't got anything nice to say...don't say anything". HOWEVER, I decided to install a Pertonix on the Duke of Oil (TR4A).? I put it on a new motor and that puppy wouldn't pull past 4000 on the dyno.? It just laid down and blubbered (technical term) at that rpm and wouldn't go further with a load on it.? After much head scrathin, I put the points back in and Voila (another of those technical terms) I had a screamer! ? I sent the unit back and they were good about it and sent another to me straightaway. Later, ok like a year or so, I decided that I would fool arond with the replacement unit before I installed it.? After a little bench time, I found that although it delivered a nice spark with an ole Lucas Sport Coil, it didn't do it at the right time!? With points, the distributer deliverd a spark every 90 degrees of rotation.? But, with the Pertronix it was off by as much as 5 degrees (different on each firing point).? No matter what I fiddled with (there's those technical terms again), I couldn't get the spark to do its thing close enough to the time I thought it should be firing. Needless to say, that unit is in the back of the shelf somewhere. ? Off a degree or two myself...
