From fisher at hctc.net Wed Aug 6 21:40:27 2008 From: fisher at hctc.net (Fisher or Elizabeth Jones) Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2008 22:40:27 -0500 Subject: [Vintage-race] Auto rummage sale Message-ID: Just a heads-up for those of you who might be interested. Following the heart attack which Fisher suffered at the end of June, his general condition has worsened. Doug Doidge, a long-time friend of Fisher's, and a CVAR racer, has very kindly offered to help me to divest myself of the balance of the 'collection' of Fisher's auto parts etc. I am almost entirely absorbed in caring for Fisher, but Doug has offered to make himself available, and another friend may also be here. Doug has posted the following message on the CVAR mailing list:- GARAGE/YARD/RUMMAGE SALE OF IMPORT CARS AND PARTS August 16-17, near Comfort, Texas, 8AM to 5PM. Sprite, Midget, MGB, Triumph, Jaguar, BMW, etc. Bodies, engines, transmissions, rear-ends, etc. Bring your trucks, trailers, tools (we have no loaners), and some help for loading. Everything goes at 10 cents per lb. - if you don't buy it, the recycler will! Contact me for directions to the location. Douglas Doidge I have not had any time to care for the property, so the grass is tall, and the weeds are taller. It will be hot, dirty, thirsty work. I would really like to get rid of everything, so then at least I may be able to get someone in to tidy the place up a bit, and have somewhere to house the cars that I want to keep. Please be aware that most of these items have been here for some time, some under cover, some not - none of the body parts have been undercover, for instance. The pole barn is piled high with an assortment of pieces, to include various blocks in indeterminate condition. There are used transmissions galore, again, condition unknown. If any of it might be of use to you, you might consider coming to have a look. elizabeth _________________________________________________________________ Fisher or Elizabeth Jones "A gentleman does not motor about after dark." Not sure whether he had a heart attack on the way in or what, but the impact broke his neck. Jack was just a wonderful, kind man. He's survived by his wife Francis, and racer son Tony who bother were at the track. Jack was one of my best friends in racing. I've known him 15 years. He was the original owner of my car Redrum. I'll look into that error. I met Jack when he'd written that story. He was hoping to have it published somewhere, but ultimately, the Team Thicko website became the home for it. Then I'd heard Jack had a bypass operation, and I think he still had staples or stitches in his chest when I met him again at Blackhawk. I gave him a Team Thicko hat, and he acted like I'd given him the Holy Grail. He was one of the first to sport the Team Thicko logo on his racecar. We got to know each other on and off the track. Jack described himself as an amateur musician... a vocalist, and he, Frances, and Tony would always be in the front row when the loosely knit Thicktones would gather and play on Sat. evenings in Thicko Village. I drove to the Quad Cities for a number of Jack's offseason parties, and 2 years ago, he and the family made the trek to WI for my 50th b'day. A funny thing about the story on the website... when I bought Redrum, my main racecar, I had no idea it was the same car that Jack told of in the story on my own website. I'd bought Jack's original racecar, and didn't even know it at the time. Jack was a hell of a racer... he'd been at it for nearly 50 years... faithful Frances always there with him. His son Tony is a great driver too, and the 2 of them often had dices. What a joy that must have been... father & son getting to race like that. Jack was an excellent engineer, and car builder. He eeked out ridiculous speed and handling from those old lumber wagon TR's he favored. He was always there to help a fellow racer. He and the rest of Team Thicko's Triumph contingent brought a whole different dynamic to the festivities, on track and off. We talked on the phone, just about every month during the off season, discussing some theory or interesting idea, club politics, or plans for the upcoming season. I would light up when I saw the Drews show up in Thicko Village... made it seem like home away from home when all our friends would gather at the track. It will seem a lot less like home without him. We believe that he blacked out behind the wheel, causing him to drive off the end of the front straight without braking or turning. It appears that he suffered a basal scull fracture in the impact with the embankment. He was doing what he loved, with the people he loved. We will all miss him, but he is in a better place now. We have been overwhelmed by the support both at the track and upon returning home, and are grateful for everyone's thoughts and prayers. We will be having visitation on Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Stackhouse Moore Funeral Home, 225 E. Park Street, Geneseo, IL 61254. It is only August 2008 so what am I talking about July 2009 for?! Well because I have such interesting information I want to get it to you now so you can start planning next summer's vacation! Yeup! Next Summer! Why? Because in 2009 Mini turns 50 and the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association & the Vintage Racer Group have already started the ball rolling for a slam bang festival for the 2009 Historic Races at BeaveRun. WAIT, do not stop reading yet. Just because you do not have a Mini. We are also changing some of the racing format and you need to check it out. Listening to your input, groups and races have changed a little bit and you need to check it out! I think you will be pleased with the changes. Also what we have planned for Mini's includes all years from the original to one rolling off the showroom floor in 2009! We have Auto-Cross, Vintage/Historic Racing, Car Corral and more planned for our Mini guests. So This may be the year your neighbor decides to come on out to our event or is your normal driver a Mini? Bring it and run the Auto-Cross or just show it off! For information, a tentative schedule, groups and if you raced with us this year you can look at a grid sheet that will show you where you would be this year, please go to www.cloverleaf-auto.com and click the vintage race button and then the BeaveRun link Thanks and keep tuned in Ralph Steinberg Director of Competition PVGPA BeaveRun Historics From tony at tonydrews.com Tue Aug 19 17:23:25 2008 From: tony at tonydrews.com (Tony Drews) Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 17:23:25 -0600 Subject: [Vintage-race] (Drews) Thursday Invitation, Thanks to all Message-ID: <20080819232307.86FF218786C@autox.team.net> For any of you planning to attend Jack's funeral on Thursday, there will be a luncheon at the church after the funeral, and you are welcome to stop by our house in Geneseo after the luncheon to celebrate Jack's life and times. I'm just back from a hectic week in Monterey. While out there, the shop working on my Turner (948 A engine & trans) called to tell me the clutch was pretty shot. I won't know what size is in there until I pull the engine beginning tomorrow night. But, I THINK it's a 7-1/4 inch. The number on the pressure plate is HA1062. Anyone know what that is? While I will only be using the Turner for racing as driving a BRG, RHD Turner here in Florida would be suicide, I don't necessarily need a full-bore racing clutch. I used the standard heavy-duty Borg & Beck in my MGB & just changed discs annually. That was a car I drove daily & raced a few times for 6 years. I haven't found anything comparable yet for the Spridget system in the Turner. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
