[Vintage-race] In-car lap timing

I am considering a Hot-Lap in-car timing system that depends on a 
infra-red trackside beacon to trigger it.  Does anyone have experience 
with this technology?  It seems to me, too, that a cooperative of sorts 
might make sense since all the transmitters are the same and any 
receiver will read the first one it sees.  Or is such a cooperative 
already going on and I just don't know about it?
