    <p>each chain regardless should be rated for the lift. The
      'multiple' is nothing more than balance.<br>
      If each chain were only rated at 250, and you were relying on 250
      x4....  and one breaks on you... they all will go as you just over
      loaded the remaining chains.<br>
      with one point on hoist and one on engine, several chains, or
      loops is another story.  PAYOR!</p>

        beefier one at a mining supply or maybe Grainger or Tractor

        this a big nope.  4 chains will need to carry the 1000 lb load -
        but it is unlikely the load would be balanced perfectly on each
        chain so at least one would exceed the 250lb limit.  In the real
        world I guess you could consider what safety factors are used to
        define chain strength but regardless I think it’s true that each
        chain would see different weight.
