Alright, here's a question for the archivists...<br>
<br>
Am about to get my 'Longdoor' TR2 painted, and need advice about under <br>
the bonnet (hood in USA)<br>
<br>
Where the front guards/fenders are bolted onto the inner guards from the <br>
scuttle/firewall forward to the front apron, the heads of the bolts (6 <br>
each side) and washer underneath are visible. Anyone know for sure if <br>
they were just painted in the body colour along with everything else, or <br>
unpainted & cadmium plated?<br>
<br>
I assume they were painted, and imagine that once the car is running <br>
again & I have done a few miles and everything has settled I will need <br>
to go round all those bolts and check if they need tightening again. If <br>
I do need to tighten them then I will probably damage the paint on the <br>
hex sides of the bolts unless there is some trick way to protect them <br>
when I put the socket onto them?<br>

All thoughts / suggestions gratefully accepted.<br>

 I seem to recall that they are painted body colour (ie: the body was assembled before painting).? When I assembled my car I used stainless steel fasteners and and left them unpainted.? The appearance is striking with the shimmering screw heads (which will remain shiny forever more) but I'll bet it will be points off in a concours.<br>
I rather doubt they will need re-torquing if they are sufficiently snugged up during initial assembly.? I never had any issues.<br>

I seem to recall that they are painted body colour (ie: the body was assembled before painting).  When I assembled my car I used stainless steel fasteners and and left them unpainted.  The appearance is striking with the shimmering screw heads (which will remain shiny forever more) but I'll bet it will be points off in a concours.<br>
<br>
I rather doubt they will need re-torquing if they are sufficiently snugged up during initial assembly.  I never had any issues.<br>

Subject: [TR] Front Fender bolt heads<br>
Alright, here's a question for the archivists...<br>
Am about to get my 'Longdoor' TR2 painted, and need advice about under the bonnet (hood in USA)<br>
Where the front guards/fenders are bolted onto the inner guards from the scuttle/firewall forward to the front apron, the heads of the bolts (6 each side)  and washer underneath are visible. Anyone know for sure if they were just painted in the body colour along with everything else, or unpainted & cadmium plated?<br>
I assume they were painted, and imagine that once the car is running again & I have done a few miles and everything has settled  I will need to go round all those bolts and check if they need tightening again. If I do need to tighten them then I will probably damage the paint on the hex sides of the bolts unless there is some trick way to protect them when I put the socket onto them?<br>
All thoughts / suggestions gratefully accepted.<br>

I?ve been using a friends Spitfire for the last ten days and today decided to top off the tank, even though it was still half full. Toured around the local gas stations to find out where the cheapest fuel might be available. To compare like with like and remembering one US gallon is effectively 3.8 litres (gas is only sold by the litre in the U.K.) the cheapest was one US gallon cost USD 8.77. Just after lunch I passed the same gas station where the price I paid this morning had risen from 8.77 to 9..12.  Diesel was even more! Thankfully, a pint of my favourite beer hasn?t changed - yet.<br>

        cheapest was one US gallon cost USD 8.77. Just after lunch I<br>

        morning had risen from 8.77 to 9..12. Diesel was even more!<br>

        Thankfully, a pint of my favourite beer hasn?t changed - yet.<br>

Not just the bolts, but the unpainted portion of the fender or washer that<br>
was under the bolt before you turned it.  Two thoughts: Did the factory<br>
never needed to tighten them? and You will probably have to re-spray the<br>
bolts of you do wind up moving them.<br>
<br>
You might have success if you protect the flats with blue painters tape to<br>
test for tightness, but once it moves I don't see any solution that doesn't<br>
involve more paint.<br>

Good question.  Many restored TRs have unpainted fasteners and are not usually faulted during judging at shows.  Everything was painted from the factory, because the bodies were painted fully assembled (minus the front apron).  They were even primed, red oxide, assembled.  When a car that was original is disassembled, there is primer behind the apron, but no paint where areas can't be reached once the apron had been installed.  So, there was no paint or primer under the washers or door hinges or between the fenders and tub.  Dumb dumb was used as sealer, gasket material between the fenders (wings) and the tub.  <br>
I painted everything disassembled and carefully painted the fasteners separately too,  when I restored my TR3.  The car had never been apart before.  I paid close attention and photo documented every detail during disassembly.  I was able to assemble the body without chipping the paint on the fasteners too much, then did a little touch up later.  Installing the fender beading after the paint was applied at the factory seems challenging, but perhaps certain fasteners were left loose.  Like the three bolts below the tail lights and screws along the truck lid and the two under the scuttle/cowl panel for the front fenders.  <br>
