They howled or moaned or rumbled and this issue affected the whole model range. It was unusual to find a car with a quiet one! Many different ‘cures’ were tried and the only moderately successful one was to change the machining angle of the gear teeth. The axles were all bought-in components from (I think a company called Salisbury) who maintained that modifying the manufacturing process (angle of gear teeth cutting) would result in a higher cost price which the Purchase Department refused to consider, so we were stuck with noisy axles. Decided it was in the differential, and decided to replace it with a Nissan R200 limited slip after replacing u-joints and checking mounts many times.
