I ran ATF in my '79 Mustang's Borg-Warner T5 back in the '80s. No problems. I don't have the car , but I still have that gearbox stashed in my garage. Maybe I'll put it in a TR some day. The Stang was a 5.0 Cobra edition that originally had a auto. I got the T5 in 1983 from a Ford engineer in Detroit that raced Mustangs in SCCA showroom stock.

Jim, I bought a new TR7 in 1980 with the 5-speed tranny. First cold weather snap hit and had problems with gear change. Took it in for service and they drained the trans of gear oil and replaced it with ATF. A service bulletin had just been sent out instructing the dealers to do that. Never had another problem.

Subject: [TR] Tr8 5 speed issue

81 tr8 with 16 k orig miles. Not mine but a friends. Had been sitting a while, we just had it refreshed and now running well and safe. The 5 speed was grinding I se one and third intermittently. I drained fluid and replaced with pennzoil synchromesh. Shifting a little better but still have some issues. Clutch master and slave and hose replaced. Clutch pedal engages near top of pedal. Lower rpm shifts easier. Sometimes it’s fine. Not as familiar with this tranny. With low mileage can’t believe it something inside. Any plastic bushes on the shift linkage that could explain. It sure what to do, don’t want o pull tranny as the original exhaust, cats etc still installed.
