    <p>The ignition timing deal is more about creating hot spots when
      the engine is running.  Too much advance causes pre-ignition which
      can cause stuff to get hot enough to ignite the fuel.  One source
      of that could be a piece of the head gasket protruding into the
      combustion chamber.</p>

      Same problem here with the TR3 motor in the Morgan, but not the
      TR3.  I don’t see how ignition timing could affect it as it is
      turned off.  I used to hear it was due to carbon buildup
      continuing to ignite fuel, but that doesn’t fly for a fresh
      engine.

      <div>I’m going to lean the mixture a little and see if that makes
        any difference.  Till then, Dave’s method of easing the clutch
        out seems to be the accepted workaround.  </div>
