It rose and fell with RPM's, inconsistent but frequent, but wasn't a knock, so I suspected a broken timing chain tensioner. <br class=""><br class="">Spent quality time with the apron today, and found the issue much better than I expected. The center bolt was loose, the one that goes into the crankshaft to hold the fan extension and pulley hub. Since it also keeps the crank timing gear in place, the gear must have been moving a bit back and forth making that noise. Pulled the timing chain cover and all's well in there, so will be replacing the front oil seal (that was leaking like mad and now I know why) and buttoning up this weekend.<br class=""><br class="">Queston: Rebuilt the engine some four driving seasons ago, and took this long to come loose.
