I am just finishing a restoration on a ’57 small-mouth where I did the rust repair (thankfully minimal as the car was out of CA) and lined up the panels with really good gaps. I welded in the new rockers and made sure everything was straight. Then I took the car to a shop where they went through the process of hammering out as much metal as possible, covering the car with a skim of filler, sanding, filling the pinholes with putty, sanding, priming x3, sanding after each coat, sealing, base, clear, wheeling and buffing. It took 8 weeks. If the slave & fork are moving ½" or a bit more then it may well be a broken fork pin.
