A nut this size is unobtainable from McMaster-Carr. Faced with the same problem a few years ago, I hogged out a ¼” stainless nut, bought a 7/16-32 tap (it IS available from McM-C for 30 bucks), and threaded it. It works and looks fine, but 30 bucks for a nut? It must be love.
